Wealth of Time
With the impact of the financial crisis yet to play out in full, government should invest now in timebanking to enable us to exchange the skills, knowledge and resources that we all have. This recession-proof means of exchange should be embedded at the heart of all public services, says a new report from think-tank nef (the new economics foundation)
This report marks the tenth anniversary of the timebanking movement in the UK and assesses the potential of timebanks for improving public services and strengthening communities.

Home Office
Martin Simon received the following message from staff at the Home Office. If you are able to offer them something then please let me know.
"When we met a while ago I mentioned that my head of unit would like our unit to do some volunteering in the local community. You told me that you would ask colleagues of yours to contact me about projects in London that we may be able to get involved with for a day. We are very keen to do some volunteering. Please could you let me know if this is still a possibility and where the local projects are that we might be able to help with."

reasons to be cheerful
nef's centre for well-being has developed a set of five evidence-based actions that, if practised regularly, can improve personal well-being.
In the midst of the credit crunch, growing economic uncertainty and accelerating climate change, the recommended actions, based on extensive research compiled by nef for the Government’s Foresight project on Mental Capital and Well-being, show that well-being does not depend on spending money or consuming more.
Scanning down the list you might recognise a close correlation with timebanking!

Grants for environmental projects that work with people with mental health problems
Mind begins £7.5m grants initiative
Mental health charity Mind has launched a £7.5m grant-giving
programme to fund environmental projects that work with people who
have mental health problems.
Ecominds, funded by the Big Lottery Fund's environment programme,
Changing Spaces, will distribute funds to 125 projects from community
groups, schools and businesses in England over the next five years.
The funding is divided into four categories: small grants of up to
£20,000; medium grants from £20,000 to £60,000; large grants of
between £60,000 and £150,000; and five 'flagship' grants of between
£150,000 and £250,000.
Applicants to Mind must demonstrate how they plan to involve people
with mental health problems in their environmental projects.
The scheme will operate a rolling application programme that assesses
about 30 bids three times a year. Successful proposals will have a
maximum of three and a half years to complete their projects using
the grant.
