Rushey Green Time bank is a registered charity based in a busy health centre in South London
Rushey Green Time Bank (‘RGTB’) was the first time bank in the UK to be based in a health-care setting, and it has established a reputation for pioneering work in this field. It is based at the Rushey Green Group Practice, which provides patient-centered holistic care for over 10,000 patients in Catford, South East London.
The time bank was started by Dr Byng who was convinced that increasing their contact with other people could help many of his patients who presented themselves with symptoms of depression and isolation. He also hoped to find a framework in which they could feel useful to society and needed by others.
People can be referred to the time bank by their doctors, other healthcare workers or service providers, or they can join directly themselves. Through joint work between Rushey Green Time Bank and the Rushey Green Group Practice time bank members can be actively involved in improving their own wellbeing, and in the promotion of good health.
The time bank has received several awards including the London Health Commission award for ‘Outstanding achievements in partnership with the NHS – activities that bring communities together to work with NHS staff to improve health and well-being’; the City of London Sustainable City Award for ‘Access to goods and services for disadvantaged communities’; and the Founders Award from Dr Edgar Cahn for ‘Pioneers In Enlisting The Community To Coproduce Health And Well being’.
Having successfully operated for over 11 years, the time bank has accrued a significant level of experience and knowledge on how to start and run a time bank, with a unique understanding of the role of the broker, maintaining boundaries, working with older people, and coproduction. The time bank also provides observerships, consultancy and comprehensive workshops on time banking in a health setting.
